Ph.D. candidates had a different set of robes from that of the undergraduate and postgraduate graduands. Although it is difficult to gauge the exact colour from the black and white photographs, we can come to a conclusion that the robes worn by the Ph.D. scholars were of a lighter shade. This photograph is from the fifth convocation of IIT Madras. Dr. Vikram A. Sarabhai, Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission was the chief guest for the occasion. The student receiving the prize is yet to be identified. A total of 388 degrees were conferred in the year 1968. This included 292 B. Tech. degrees, 18 in M. Sc., 52 in M.
