For the first time, the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras. IIT Kharagpur clinched the trophy for the third consecutive time, followed by IIT Bombay and Madras. Seated, from left, Mr. R. This was the first time the tournament was being held at IIT Madras. The first two were held in Bombay (1961) and Kharagpur (1963). The event also served as the inauguration of the stadium. According to Mr. B. S. Sudhir Chandra’s article in ‘Pradeep’, Pataudi gave a short speech, stressing on the role of games and physical training in Universities. The flag (in picture) has the logos of the IITs that participated. The Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place at IIT Madras. It was the first one to be held at Madras. IIT Kharagpur had won the previous two Inter-IITs and followed up with a hattrick of victories by winning this meet as well. IIT Bombay were runners up and IIT Madras secured third place. The cultural programme of the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was most likely held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). This was the first meet to be held at IIT Madras. Some of the programmes in the cultural events included plays in Tamil, English and Hindi and group songs and music performances by students of the various IITs.
