This performance was a part of the cultural programme of the Third-Inter IIT Sports Meet, held at IIT Madras. The cultural programme also included group songs. The play was most likely held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). The performers are yet to be identified. The Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place at IIT Madras. It was the first one to be held at Madras. IIT Kharagpur had won the previous two Inter-IITs and followed up with a hattrick of victories by winning this meet as well. IIT Bombay were runners up and IIT Madras secured third place. Also seen in the photograph is Prof. P. C. Varghese (Gymkhana President, extreme right). The cultural programme during the meet most likely took place at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). There were performances of plays in Tamil, Hindi and English and also music performances by groups of students from the various IITs. IIT Madras hosted the Inter-IIT Sports Meet for the first time. Some of the details from the event are recorded in The Sixth Annual Number of IIT Madras (1965) and the Alumni Association magazine Pradeep. IIT Kharagpur won the championship for the third consecutive time, while IIT Bombay and Madras clinched the second and third places respectively. Seen in the photograph are, Prof. P. C. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the prize distribution ceremony and gave away the prizes. A report in the first issue of ‘Pradeep’ by Mr. B. S. Sudhir Chandra indicates that Prof. Sengupto gave a formal introduction of the chief guest The Nawab of Pataudi, Mansoor Ali Khan after which Khan declared the meet open.  Prof. Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras (1959 to 1967). He was responsible for a lot of the growth and development of the Institute in the early years. Seen in the photograph, Mr. R. The Third Inter-IIT Sports Meet was the first one to be held at IIT Madras. The cultural programme consisted of plays in different languages including English, Hindi and Tamil, and also included group songs. Students from various IITs took part in the cultural programmes. The student in the black suit is Mr. K. V. Rangaswami. He received his B. Tech. in Civil Engineering from IIT Madras in 1965. This was the first time that the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras. The chief guest Mansoor Ali Khan also inaugurated the stadium at the start of the meet. In the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras (1965-1966), R. Natarajan wrote an article titled ‘The Royal Tiger from Pataudi’, in which he praises Mansoor Ali Khan’s captaincy, “There is something that has always stood out about Pataudi. As captain, he brought a fresh and uninhibited approach to the game and took the slightest gamble, if only to infuse some spirit and the dash of a derring-do to the languishing game of today.”…

The prize distribution ceremony took place on 31 December. Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the function. IIT Kharagpur won the overall championship this year, making this their third consecutive win in the Inter-IIT Sports Meets. Seen in the photograph are, Mr. R. This was the first time that the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras. IIT Kharagpur had won the previous two meets which were held in Bombay (1961) and Kharagpur (1963). IIT Kharagpur managed to make it a hat trick of wins when they clinched the trophy once again at IIT Madras. It is not clear who the student in the photograph is. The cultural programme was most likely held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT) and also included group songs. The performers are yet to be identified. The play “The New Wing at Elsinore” was written by English playwright St. John Hankin (1869-1909) and appeared in the book Mr. Punch’s Dramatic Sequels. He was a major proponent of Edwardian "New Drama" along with George Bernard Shaw and John Galsworthy. The play was a sequel to William Shakespeare’s Hamlet, which Hankin thought could use…

Mansoor Ali Khan, Nawab of Pataudi stayed at the Institute Guest House for a span of three days. Mr. R. Natarajan, in a recent interview with Prof. Ajit Kolar, recalls humorously how he had tried to persuade the Nawab to stay for two more days. The Nawab, it is said, had replied that the food that was prepared by Gopal the butler, was so good, that it would ruin his cricket career if he stayed any longer at the guest house.
