The eighth convocation of IITM took place on July 31, 1971. The event began at 05:00 pm that Saturday and the chief guest and speaker for the event was Prof. M. G. K. Menon, F. R. S. (Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Chairman, Electronics Commission, Govt. of India). Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the event.
