Moire’ analysis of plate bending
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

The Moire’ Fringe Analysis is conducted with the purpose of measuring strains in deformed bodies and engineering structures. The Moire’s experiment described in the image, in which plate behaviour is being studied, states that: Moire’ interference fringes produced by the super position of reflected grid lines (alternate dark and white) on the curved screen by the bent and unbent plate are analysed for plate behaviour. The analysis unit consists of a basic structure, photographic attachment and development of special mechanical method of drawing on paper gridlines.

Holographic interferometry is a technique used for whole field displacement analysis and non-destructive testing. The image describes a set-up for holographic interferometry that was conducted by the Department of Applied Mechanics. The setup was arranged on a vibration free concrete table top.

Stress Freezing Oven

Stress Freezing Oven
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

Stress freezing ovens are used for stress freezing in three-dimensional photoelastic analysis and annealing of photoelastic specimens. This process is carried out by heating the specimen and allowing it to cool slowly, in order to remove internal stresses and toughen it. The image describes the specifications of a stress freezing oven used by the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras. The oven was programme-controlled and provided with a facility to increase the temperature to 250°C at the rate of 2°C per hour.

Nuclear Quadrupole and Zero-field Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

Seen in the image is a nuclear quadrupole and zero-field nuclear magnetic resonance spectrometer that was photographed at the department of physics. The spectrometer covers a range of 120cMHz-350 MHz and can be used to study the properties of solids by NQR spectroscopy, viz. chemical inequivalence, nature of the electric field gradient, bond characters etc. Molecules containing bromine and some iodine nuclei can be studied using this instrument. Zero-field NMR studies in ferromagnetic alloys can also be undertaken using this spectrometer, viz. determination of internal magnetic fields,…

Vibratory conveyor
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

A vibratory conveyer is generally used to convey different types of granular solids under varying conditions. The image describes the specifications of a vibratory conveyor used by the Department of Mechanical Engineering at IIT Madras. The conveyor is 2.35 m long, 250 mm wide: 3T/her with a screw conveyer for feeding back the material. The speed of the vibrator can be adjusted from 600 to 1800 rpm. The maximum force is 750 kgf. The motor used is a variable speed D.C. motor.

  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

The image describes the specifications of a research centrifugal fan impeller that was designed by the Department of Mechanical Engineering, IIT Madras. The centrifugal fan is designed for 3600m3/hr of free air at 400 mmWc running at 1500 rpm and operates at an efficiency of 68%.

Jig boring/jig grinding machine

Jig boring/jig grinding machine
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

Jig-boring machines are used for boring, drilling, counter-sinking, reaming, milling, and other types of finishing in individual and small-scale production during the manufacture of cutting and measuring tools, jigs, dies, and key components of machines and instruments. A jig grinder is a machine tool used for grinding complex shapes and holes where the highest degrees of accuracy and finish are required. Seen in the image is a machine that is both a jig boring and jig grinding machine that is manufactured by a German company, Deckel. It was installed in the Central Workshop in IIT Madras at…

Photo-resist spinner

Photo-resist spinner
  • Photographs , Equipment , 1970s

The image describes a photo-resist spinner designed by the Department of Electrical Engineering, IIT Madras. This equipment was specially designed and developed for applying thin and uniform coating of a photo-resist material on various substrates. It is intended for applications in the R and D and manufacture of semi-conductor devices like transistors, diodes, I.Cs and thin film devices. It can also be used for coating thin layers of any other liquid material.
