Prof B. Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras. He served his tenure from 1959 to 1967. This was the last convocation he would attend as Director of the Institute. A total of 321 students graduated in 1967. Out of 321, 259 were undergraduates, 50 postgraduates and 12 were Ph.D. scholars.

V. Seshadri and B. Ramaswami both qualified for the award of the Ph.D. degree from the Department of Electrical Engineering. They both completed their research in Automatic Control and Computation Systems. V. Seshadri represented the department with three papers at the I.T.E. Convention held in Delhi. He also delivered lectures on invitation at the APTI Summer School on Control Systems held in May-June 1967 at C.E.E.R.I., Pilani, besides contributing two papers to the Associated Seminar on Control Systems. A total of 12 Ph.D. scholars received their degrees in the year 1967.
