The 35th Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place at IIT Madras, and according to their Annual Report from 1999, the host team emerged as the champions of the tournament. Prof. Srinivasa Sampath (Deputy Director) joined IIT Madras as a Professor of Electrical Engineering in 1961. In 1965 he was named Deputy Director, and in 1973 took the role of Head of the Computer Centre, when the institute got an IBM 370. Prof. S. Sampath was the Chairman, Council of Wardens; Warden, Narmada hostel. In 1981, the Government of India appointed Prof. S. Sampath as Director of IIT Kanpur. From left: Mr. C. V. Institute Days in the 1960s were celebrated at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). The seats would be packed and people looked forward to the event which was held with much pomp and splendour. Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, second from left) was the second Director of IIT Madras. His tenure began in December 1967 after Prof. B. Sengupto completed his term. Dr. Karl Pfauter (Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany, third from left) was the chief guest at the Ninth Institute Day at IIT Madras. It is very likely that the magazine being presented is the Annual Number of IIT Madras. Annual Numbers were released on Institute Days in the 1960s. Dances, magic shows, plays, music performances and various cultural activities were a hallmark of the Institute Day programme in the 1960s. It was a community event which brought together students, professors and staff members of IIT, children from Vanavani School, campus children and other residents of the campus. Prof. Nikolaus Klein (Gymkhana President) was born on 22 October 1929, at Frankfurt-on-Main. He studied Greek in 1951 after passing his School Final. The same year, he joined the University of Frankfurt-on Main to study Comparative Linguistics, Philosophy and History of Fine Art. Soon, he diverted his attention to the field of Indology. In 1953 he joined the University of Munich, and the following year, he went to Tuebingen to continue his studies in Indian Philosophy (Advaita) and Comparative Religions. Dr. Karl Pfauter (Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany) was the chief guest at the Ninth Institute Day at IIT Madras. Institute Days in the 1960s were held to award prizes to students and staff who contributed to the Institute in various fields, including extra-curricular activities and academics. The Annual Report of IIT Madras (1967-68) provides details of the prize winners at the Ninth Institute Day. Prof. Arcot Ramachandran (Director) started his career as a faculty member of the Department of Power Engineering at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. It was in 1959 that Prof. A. Ramachandran’s association with IIT Madras began when he attended a summer course at the Institute. A decade later, he would become the second Director of the Institute. Chief guest Karl Pfauter (Consul General of the Federal Republic of Germany) was head of the cultural department at the German embassy in New Delhi in 1954, and from 1961; he was head of the economic department at the German embassy in Athens.
