A rare photograph of the first IIT Madras faculty and staff members contributed by Dr. Poornima Balasubramanyam, alumna

Dr. Poornima Balasubramanyam, an alumna of the 1984 B.Tech. batch provided to the Heritage Centre, a  photograph of the first batch of faculty and staff members at IIT Madras. This photograph was part of Dr. Balasubramanyam's mother Mrs. R. G. Lalitha Devi's collection. Mrs. R. G. Lalitha Devi was one of the first-ever staff members of IIT Madras. The photograph was handed over by Mr. M. Subramanian, a classmate of Dr. Poornima Balasubramanyam, and also an alumnus (B.Tech., 1984). Visit of Mr. S. S. Mani Venkata and Mrs. Padma

Mr. S. S. Mani Venkata is an alumnus of IIT Madras. He graduated in 1965 with a Master's degree in Electrical Engineering. Mr. S. S. Mani Venkata and his wife Padma visited the Heritage Centre on 10 January 2023. These photographs were taken during their visit.

Visit of Mr. S. R. Thangavelu

In 1964, Mr. S. R. Thangavelu (B. Tech. in Mechanical Engineering) won the coveted President’s Prize (best academic record). Part of the first batch of students, he was also the first gold medalist in the Institute. Mr. S. R. Thangavelu also received an Institute Merit Prize during the ceremony. He finished his pre-university at P.S.G. Arts College in Coimbatore after which he joined IIT Madras for the B. Tech. course. After graduating, Mr. S. R. Thangavelu worked for a year and a half at Ashok Leyland as a trainee. Then, he returned to IIT for an Industrial Engineering Diploma (PGDIIT).…

Mr. Ganesh Sankaran, an alumnus of IIT Madras, provided photographs from his time as a student to the Heritage Centre. The Heritage Centre thanks him for the information provided. There are various photographs that show moments from events, student trips and life in the hostels. Some of these photographs are from Mardi Gras 1995, which was the last year that the IIT Madras cultural festival was called so. It is now known as Saarang.

An extramural lecture by cartoonist R. K. Laxman

This material was contributed by Mr. Chaithanya Prasad Jayaraman of the Mechanical Engineering Department (1985 batch). The photographs show the poster for the extramural lecture by cartoonist R. K. Laxman titled "Caricature and Reality: A Cartoonist's View Point". It was held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT) at IIT Madras on 30 September 1981, 3:00 PM.
