In the photograph Sharukh Irani (B. Tech.), who graduated from IIT Madras in 1983, can be seen participating in an event at Central Lecture Theatre, during Mardi Gras (1983). Shahrukh Irani was known to be a talented orator and an entertaining speaker during the cultural festival at IIT Madras. Mono-acting, Choreography, Skit, Music and Speaking were some of the Informal events during Mardi Gras. Potpourri was another event that consisted of variations such as ‘shadow mime’, ‘man sketch’, ‘quiz mime’ and many more.
The general events associated with music during Mardi Gras ‘83, similar to the other editions of the festival, included the Indian Classical Music, Indian Light Music, Western Solo and Western Group competitions. The Western Solo competition included both vocals and instrumental categories. The Western Music Group competition was preceded by auditions after which five groups were chosen to compete, that were held prior to the competition for Madras teams and during the competition for outstation teams. The Fine Arts events were one of the most elaborately organised events of the festival, and were traditionally held at Shanti Kunj in the outdoors, along with sylvan surroundings.
