Prof. A. Ramachandran was the son of Dr. A. L. Mudaliar, the first Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIT Madras. The father-son duo were in office at the same time as Director and Chairman from 1967 to 1969 until Dr. Mudaliar retired that year. Prof. Ramachandran was the Director until 1973. Prof. Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras (1959 to 1967). He was responsible for the growth of IIT Madras in its early years. It was under his guidance that most of the infrastructure at the Institute, including the academic complexes, workshops and hostels came into existence. …

Prof. A. Ramachandran succeeded Prof. B. Sengupto as Director. Prof. Sengupto’s tenure, which had started in 1959, came to an end in December 1967. Prof. Sengupto was the first Director of the Institute. The map of the Institute was placed at the Building Sciences Block (BSB) at the time. The BSB housed the administrative offices at the time. Prof. S. Sampath was from the Department of Electrical Engineering. He was the Deputy Director of the Institute when this photograph was taken. The photograph was taken on the day when Prof. B. Sengupto handed over Directorship to Prof. A. Ramachandran after around eight years of service to the Institute. Prof. Sengupto, the first Director of the Institute, had joined in 1959. Prof. A. Ramachandran succeeded Prof. B. Sengupto as Director. Prof. Sengupto’s tenure, which had started in 1959, came to an end in December 1967. A large model of the campus was created in the early years of the Institute. We know that it was on display in the foyer of the Building Sciences Block. The Heritage Centre has several photographs in which the model is visible. The 3D model is unfortunately no longer available. There is a photograph of the model in Album 0013. Karunanidhi at the latter’s residence. The previous day, he received the Business Leadership Award from the Madras Management Association (MMA) on 15 December 1969, and delivered a lecture at the event after receiving the award.  The photograph was taken in the Conference Room on the fifth floor of the Administration Block. The Administration Block had been completed and occupied in 1968.…
