When the Federal Republic of Germany gifted the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, there were 80 terminals which were also sent. According to a Campastimes interview from February 1988, Mr. P. Seshasayi (Head of Computer Centre) says that they had planned to keep around 30-35 terminals at the Computer Centre, while the rest would be in the campus. Initially, all the terminals were kept at the Centre to judge the response times. Mr. Seshasayi talks about the difficulty in having terminals spread across the campus because it would require people to maintain the systems regularly, and not everyone was trained in this aspect.
Advanced courses for students were also being prepared during this time. These included compiling in Fortran, Pascal or Cobol, and how to program in F77 and other courses.
Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany, wearing a brown shirt) visited the Institute to formally hand over the system in an official event held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). Also seen in the photograph is Mr. P. Seshasayi (Manager, Computer Centre, in white shirt, standing).
