Students working on the new terminals, 1988

Academic Facilities , Campus Facilities , Students

When IIT Madras was given the Siemens 7580-E Computer System from the Federal Republic of Germany, the Institute also got 80 new terminals. They were initially installed at the Computer Centre and it is likely that they were distributed across the campus later. The Indo-German Agreement had made a provision for the West German Government to give IIT Madras a computer, which was selected by the Germans. According to a Campastimes interview, the Indian Government had contributed around 18 percent of the cost for the computer, while the rest of it was funded by the Federal Republic of Germany.

Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) can be seen standing at the far end of the room (in brown shirt). Mr. Klein visited IIT Madras to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to the Institute. The person he is talking to is Mr. P. Seshasayi (Manager, Computer Centre, in white shirt).
