The Siemens 7580-E computer was a powerful computer which IIT Madras acquired from the Federal Republic of Germany as a part of the Indo-German agreement of 1986. Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) officially handed the computer to IIT Madras. The banner hung behind reads “Indian Institute of Technology, Madras / Handing over of / Siemens 7580-E computer system / His Excellency Mr. Hans Klein - March 22. 88’”.
