The dimension of the building was reported to be 80 metres by 55 metres. Mr. Giani Zail Singh, the President of India was the chief guest for the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India, serving his term from 1982 to 1987. He also held several other important posts in his political career, such as Minister of Home Affairs (1980 to 1982), ninth Chief Minister of Punjab (1972 to 1977) and Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (1983 to 1986). During his visit to IIT Madras, he planted a sapling to commemorate the opening of the new Student Activities Centre (SAC) and also inaugurated the building officially.
