The photograph was taken on the 20th convocation day in 1983. The sapling marked the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). SAC was constructed to host convocations, indoor sports activities and other lectures. It was a practical alternative to the Open Air Theatre (OAT) which would get flooded during rains. The photograph was taken outside the newly constructed Student Activities Centre (SAC) building. Prof. P. V. Indiresan (Director, second from right) is seen in the photograph, conversing with a gentleman (yet to be identified).  The Director is wearing his convocation robes. The Archive of IIT Madras has preserved some of the convocation robes from the recent past, which gives us an idea of the colour, texture and also the tailoring company which provided IIT Madras its robes.

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. Mrs. Sheila Kaul (Union Minister for Education and Culture) presents the degree to the student.  According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-84, a total of 580 students received their degrees during the 20th Convocation, pushing the total number of degrees awarded by the Institute to 9537. In the year 1983, 216 students were awarded the B.Tech., 178 the M.Tech., 52 the M.Sc., 60 the M.S. and 72 the Ph.D. degree of the Institute. This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. The event was held at the Student Activities Centre (SAC) which was newly constructed. According to the Annual Report of 1983, the Student Activities Centre (SAC) was built as a multipurpose auditorium cum indoor stadium. The dimension of the building was reported to be 80 metres by 55 metres. The building consisted of a central bowl, stage, spectator gallery, mezzanine floor, two conference rooms, cafeteria and a store room. It was further written that the building was intended for indoor functions, convocation, sports events…

This photograph was taken at IIT Madras’ 20th convocation. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1983-84, a total of 580 students received their degrees during the 20th convocation, pushing the total number of degrees awarded by the Institute to 9537. The students in maroon robes are undergraduate students. The graduands in the off-white robes are most likely to be either Ph.D. students or graduands from other courses that were offered such as the Quality Improvement Program (QIP) course and so on.

This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation. The academic procession is a formation of two rows headed by the Registrar. The Director and the chief guest are the last two to enter the convocation hall. As the chief guest enters the hall, the first six bars of the national anthem are played.  Prof. H. N. This photograph was taken during the Institute’s 20th convocation at the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Prof. P. V. Indiresan (right) was the Director of the Institute at the time. The Institute held Quality Improvement Programmes (QIPs) and other courses for older students (typically those employed as faculty members in colleges) and it is possible that the person on the left (in maroon robes) receiving the certificate was enrolled in one of these courses.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh (President of India, right) plants a sapling to commemorate the inauguration of the Student Activities Centre (SAC). Construction of SAC was completed in 1983. The inauguration of SAC took place on the same day as the 20th convocation. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India. He served his tenure from 1982 to 1987.

Mr. Giani Zail Singh, the President of India was the chief guest for the 20th convocation of IIT Madras. Mr. Singh was the seventh President of India, serving his term from 1982 to 1987. He also held several other important posts in his political career, such as Minister of Home Affairs (1980 to 1982), ninth Chief Minister of Punjab (1972 to 1977) and Chairman of the Non-Aligned Movement (1983 to 1986). During his visit to IIT Madras, he planted a sapling to commemorate the opening of the new Student Activities Centre (SAC) and also inaugurated the building officially.
