The Building Sciences Block (BSB) was the first administrative and departmental building to be completed on the IIT Madras campus. It was completed in August 1961. It housed the administrative offices, Director’s office and the Senate Hall until 1968, after which the current Administration Block was built and brought into use. Kendriya Vidyalaya, also known as the Central School is located opposite the Administration Building of IIT Madras near Gajendra Circle. It is easily accessible via bus from the main gate since the bus stop is situated near the football ground of the Central School. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1967 reports that the Central School started functioning from 20 July, 1964 with classes VI to IX. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1963 notes that a pump house for a fresh supply of water had been put up along with two reservoirs with capacities of 1,50,000 and 50,000 gallons. It is likely that the pump house being referred to is the one in the photograph. The Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1964 confirms that the hostel was started in the month of July in 1964. The first Warden of Saraswathi Hostel was Prof. D. Venkateswarlu. Saraswathi Hostel was among the first six hostels to be completed on campus. Among these were Krishna, Cauvery, Narmada, Tapti and Godavari. It is likely that the building in the photograph is one of the B1 type quarters which was built for Professors and their families to reside.
