In the 1960s, the Applied Mechanics Department of IIT Madras had a wind tunnel among its facilities. German technicians came to the Institute to assemble the tunnel which became functional in the late 1960s. It was used for industry work (smoke nuisance) and laboratory work for a few years. This photograph was taken during one of the many events that were held at IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. A campus publication at the time, The Fourth Estate notes that there were several music contests held during Saarang. These included Western Music and Light Music. It is likely that this photograph was taken during one of these events. The report in The Fourth Estate mentions that the quality of participants from the events was high and the Western Music competition was dominated by colleges from Chennai. Some of these events were called Acoustix and Powerchord according to the…
