This photograph was taken during the visit of Sringeri Sharada Peethadhipati Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamiji. The Swamiji was the 35th Jagadguru Sankaracharya of the Sringeri Sarada Pitha. The Swamiji embarked on an all-India tour in June 1964. It is very likely that his visit to IIT Madras was a part of this tour. He visited the Jalakanteshwara Temple at IIT Madras. In the photograph, Swamiji (extreme right), Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, second from right) and Prof. R. Krishnamurthi (Head of Humanities Department, third from right).

The main deities of Jalakanteshwara Temple are Lord Shiva (Jalakanteshwara) and Devi Katyayani.  The photograph was taken during the visit of Sringeri Sharada Peethadhipati Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamiji. The Swamiji was the 35th Jagadguru Sankaracharya of the Sringeri Sarada Pitha. The Sringeri Matha was established in the 8th century CE by the saint Adi Sankara. This photograph was taken at the Jalakanteshwara Temple, IIT Madras. It was taken during the visit of Sringeri Sharada Peethadhipati Sri Abhinava Vidyatheertha Swamiji. The main deities of this temple are Lord Shiva (Jalakanteshwara) and Devi Katyayani. The renovation of this temple was completed in 1965 and the kumbhabhishekam was done on 18 June in the same year. According to a website, the Shiva lingam was present under a mandapam and a thatched roof near the IIT lake prior to the establishment of IIT Madras. This visit has been recorded in an article titled ‘Brief look at the history of temples in IIT Madras campus’ by Arun Ayyar, Harish Ganapathy and Hemanth C.
