This photograph was taken during one of the events held at Saarang. It was most likely a competition for students, but this has not been confirmed. According to a report in The Fourth Estate, there was a quiz, antakshari, dramatics, cluedo and other events. It is likely that this photograph was taken at one of the classrooms in the Institute. The person in the white shirt is Prof. L. S. Ganesh from the Department of Management Studies. Prof. Ganesh was at IIT Madras from 1987 to 2020. This photograph was taken during one of the events or competitions which took place at IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. The photograph shows students immersed in an event. Through a report in The Fourth Estate we come to know that there were many events organized by the coordinators. Some of these were Western music, light music solo, light music group and the highly acclaimed quizzes. We are not sure during which event this photograph was taken, nor do we know the names of persons in the photograph. We do know that the events were attended by participants from across the country…

This photograph was taken during the Institute’s annual cultural event Saarang. It is likely that this photograph was taken during Saarang’s ‘Choreo-nite’, which is a dance competition. According to a report in The Hindu, the Choreo-nite, among other events, drew the largest crowds. It appears that the dancers are performing Mohiniyattam, an Indian classical dance developed in Kerala. This assumption has been made on the basis that the performers are wearing the traditional off-white sarees with gold coloured borders. The dancers have not been identified. This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest Saarang. Saarang was previously called Mardi Gras but the name was changed in 1996. This photograph appears to have been taken at a competition, possibly dramatics, but this has not been confirmed. According to a report in The Fourth Estate, seven plays were staged. The report mentions “One of the judges did point out that the quality of the competition had dipped in the four years he’d been coming.” The participants in the photograph are yet to be identified. This photograph was taken during Saarang, IIT Madras’ annual cultural and social fest. It is likely that this photograph was taken during Saarang’s ‘Choreo-nite’, which is a dance competition. According to a report in The Hindu, the Choreo-nite, among other events, drew the largest crowds. The dancer appears to be performing a traditional Indian dance, but we are not certain which dance form she is adhering to. The dancer has not been identified. From a report in The Hindu, we know that there were several cultural events held, including a Western music competition and a light music competition. According to the report, these were among the popular events which took place. Students from various colleges across the city and country took part in these competitions. A dance team performs at Saarang 2003

Through a report in The Hindu, we know that a ‘Choreo-nite’ was held during Saarang in this year. Along with events such as the quiz, light music and others, Choreo-nite was one of the popular events which drew a large crowd. At this event, dance groups from various colleges compete to win the prize. It is likely that this photograph was taken during Choreo-nite. We do not know who the dancers in the image are.
