This photograph was taken during the inauguration of the Hydraulics Laboratory on 3 August 1970. The event has been recorded in an issue of Campastimes. The report notes that Prof. Rouve spoke after the Director’s address. According to the report, he “gave a short history of the build-up and working of the lab”. Dr. K. L. Rao, Union Minister for Irrigation and Power was the chief guest for the inauguration function of the Hydraulics Laboratory on 3 August 1970. A Campastimes report notes that Dr. Rao was taken around the Laboratory by Prof. Gerhard Rouve and Prof. A. Ramachandran after declaring open the towing tank. Seen in the photograph are Prof. A. Dr. K. L. Rao, the chief guest, unveiled the stone during the inauguration of the Hydraulics Laboratory. The inauguration has been recorded in an issue of Campastimes.  The photograph was taken outside the Hydraulics Laboratory under a shamiana, where the audience had gathered to witness the event. “Most of them sat staring at a marble stone thinly veiled by a yellow diaphanous fabric”.  The foundation stone reads “Hydraulic Engineering Laboratory / Declared Open by / Dr.   K. He was the Union Minister for Irrigation and Power, and an engineer himself. He was a graduate of College of Engineering, Guindy.  Prof. Gerhard Rouve (second from left) was a German professor from the Department of Civil Engineering. Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director of IIT Madras) is also in the photograph (fourth from left).
