In 1967, Independence Day was celebrated with a special parade alongside the No.2 Madras Mixed Coy. The Director of IIT Madras Prof. Sengupto took the salute and addressed the cadets. It is likely that the event took place near the NCC building, which is visible in the photograph. During Independence Day at IIT Madras, NCC cadets usually present the Director of the Institute with a guard of honour. The guard of honour is usually presented to important persons, such as chief guests and VIPs. The convocation is another event where a guard of honour is presented to the chief guest. On 5…

In 1967, Independence Day was celebrated with a special parade alongside the No.2 Madras Mixed Coy. The Director of IIT Madras Prof. Sengupto took the salute and addressed the cadets. It is likely that the event took place near the NCC building, which is visible in the photograph.  It is not clear to us where the band was from. It is likely that the band was hired from outside solely for the occasion. At IIT Madras, bands also perform at convocations when the NCC cadets present the guard of honour to the chief guest. Stress freezing ovens are used for stress freezing in three-dimensional photoelastic analysis and annealing of photoelastic specimens. This process is carried out by heating the specimen and allowing it to cool slowly, in order to remove internal stresses and toughen it. The image shows a stress freezing oven used by the Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras. The oven was programme-controlled and provided with a facility to increase the temperature to 250°C at the rate of 2°C per hour. Taken during one of the competitions at Saarang 2003, this photograph shows a student attempting to bite an apple hung by a thread. Although we are not sure about the rules or name of the event, we can assume that the participants were not allowed to use their hands during this event.  Through the Director’s Report published in the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 2002-2003, we know that several competitions were held during Saarang. It is also clear through other photographs in the Saarang albums that participants from various other colleges participated in the competitions.  We…

This photograph was taken during Saarang 2003. Saarang had several music shows and competitions over the days and this was possibly taken during one of the many events. Through a report in The Hindu, we know that there was a Western music competition called Powerchord, a light music competition and several shows such as the fusion show and a rock show on the final night.  We are not sure who the drummer in the photograph is. This photograph was taken during one of the events organized at Saarang. It appears that the students seated in the photograph are organizers for an event. It is likely that they are registering the list of participants on sheets of paper. From an article in the campus publication The Fourth Estate, we know that there were more than 300 students involved in setting up Saarang 2003. From other photographs taken during the event, we know that there were participants from colleges across the city and country. This photograph was taken during one of the events held at Saarang 2003, most likely during a classical music competition. It shows two students, one playing a mridangam (to the left) and the other playing a flute (to the right).  Through a report in The Fourth Estate, we learn that there were several music competitions held during Saarang. This photograph was taken during Saarang, IIT Madras’ annual cultural fest. From a report in The Fourth Estate, a campus publication, we know that there were several music competitions not only in the classical category, but also in the Western music and light music category. Through the reports, we know that colleges from Chennai dominated the Western music competitions. However, there is not much information regarding the classical music competitions. This photograph was taken during one of the music performances at Saarang 2003. From a report in The Hindu, we know that a fusion show was performed on the second night of Saarang. One of the shows had the saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath perform with Moksha, the rock band. However, the band in the photograph appears to be a different group.
