This photograph was taken during a track event, most likely a sprint at the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet. The meet was held in IIT Madras from 28 to 31 December in 1970. IIT Madras emerged as the winners of the tournament with an impressive tally of 68 points followed by IIT Kanpur with 40. Third place was shared by IIT Bombay, Delhi and Kharagpur who were able to score 24 points each. The points table has been recorded in the February 1971 edition of Campastimes. It is not clear to us who the participants are and also the event taking place.  

IIT Madras hosted the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet in 1970. The students appear to be dressed in formals, which is not the case today, where sports uniforms have replaced the earlier trend. The IIT Madras team went on to win the General Championship in this year. There is a detailed report of the sports meet in the February 1971 edition of the student run magazine Campastimes. This photograph was taken at the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet in IIT Madras. The student in the photograph appears to be either taking part in the long jump event or the triple jump event. In the three jumps high, triple and long (broad), Madras dominated. Kanpur was unable to score any points in the jumps, while Madras scored a total of 16, ten coming solely from triple jump. Bombay had ten points in jumps and Kharagpur had four. Delhi had three. It is not clear to us who the student in the photograph is.

The event was held at the stadium at IIT Madras from 28-31 December. The home team IIT Madras won the General Championship. Grewal (chief guest) was the General Officer Commanding for Tamil Nadu, Mysore and Kerala. There is not much information available about him.  Also seen in the photograph, seated in the first row, is Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Mechanical Engineering Department).

This photograph was taken at the opening ceremony of the event. According to a Campastimes report, the opening ceremony consisted of a march-past which went well. The chief guest Major General Prakash Singh Grewal took the salute and declared the meet open. This was apparently followed by fireworks and “balloons haunting the skies”. Prof. Ramachandran was the second Director of IIT Madras. He succeeded Prof. B. Sengupto in 1967.  This photograph was taken during the opening ceremony of the meet. Also seen in the photograph is Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (Mechanical Engineering Department, first row, first from left).

IIT Madras was unable to score points in the sprints, but did fairly well in the hurdles and middle and long distance races. It is not clear to us who the athlete in the photograph is, nor do we know the event he is participating in.
