Haravu Venkatanarasingha Verada Raj ‘H. V. R.’ Iengar served as Chairman, Board of Governors, IIT Madras, from 1969 to 1972. This was the second time in the 1960s that a Chairman, Board of Governors was chief guest at the Institute Day, the first being Dr. A. L. Mudaliar in 1966. Also seen in the photograph is Mr. Srinivasan (Physical Training Instructor, extreme right, partially covered). The students in the image are yet to be identified.

Dances, magic shows, plays, music performances and various cultural activities were a hallmark of the Institute Day programme in the 1960s. It was a community event which brought together students, professors and staff members of IIT, children from Vanavani School, campus children and other residents of the campus. One can observe several musical instruments in the photograph. There appears to be a guitar/ukulele (far left), an accordion, a drum kit, and an Indian percussion instrument, possibly a mridangam (far right). The performers are yet to be identified.
