At the third convocation a total of 305 students (203 B. Tech. degrees, 38 M. Sc. degrees and 64 M. Tech. degrees) received their degrees. The event commenced with an invocation, and the ceremony was declared open by Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Padma Bhushan, Padma Vibhushan), the Chairman of the Board of Governors. This was followed by the department-wise ‘passing of Grace’. The head of each department respectively supplicates ‘Doth it please you that this Grace be passed’ to the members of the Board of Governors and Senate. After each member of the board assents, the Grace is passed. In the photo,…

This photograph was found in an album containing photographs from the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras in 1963. It is not clear when this photograph was taken but we think it could be between the years 1967 to 1973. We think that it was taken between these years because Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director of IIT Madras, seated second from left at the stage) is in the photograph. Prof. Ramachandran was the Director between these years. Also seen in the photograph are Prof. S. Sampath (Deputy Director, extreme left) and Prof. W. Koch (Department of Physics, seated extreme right, near the…
This photograph was found in an album containing photographs from the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras in 1963. It is not clear when this photograph was taken but we think it could be between the years 1972 to 1978, when Mr. K. T. Chandy (extreme right) was the Chairman of the Board of Governors. Also seen in Prof. K. A. V. Pandalai from the Aeronautical Engineering Department. Prof. Pandalai was the Director of IIT Madras from 1973 to 1977. If you have any information about the photograph, please reach out to us.
This photograph was taken at the Carpentry Shop during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. Construction of the Central Workshops was completed in June 1961. The Workshops were one of the first constructions to come up on campus. The idea behind the Central Workshops was to provide students with a practical knowledge of subjects in engineering that they were studying in classes. In this way, they would not only be theoretically sound, but also practically so. Seen in the photograph, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, extreme right) and Mr. Walter Scheel (…
Mr. Scheel, Minister of Economic Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany, seen standing fourth from left, visited the Institute in December 1963. Here, he is seen standing with Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar, extreme left) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, second from left). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1962-63, road construction was completed in 1962-63. In the Souvenir Volume which was published in 1962 to commemorate the visit of Dr. Heinrich Luebke (President of the Federal Republic of…
This photograph was taken during Mr. Walter Scheel’s visit to the Institute. Mr. Scheel was the first Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. During his visit, he visited the Central Workshops and some of the laboratories at IIT Madras. We think this photograph was taken at a Physics Laboratory, owing to the fact that Prof. S. Ramaseshan (extreme left) and Prof. W. Koch (second from left) from the Department of Physics are in the photograph. Seen in the photograph, Mr. Walter Scheel (Minister of Economic Cooperation, Federal Republic of Germany,…
This photograph was taken during Mr. Walter Scheel’s visit to IIT Madras. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation of the Federal Republic of Germany. The photograph was taken at the Bose-Einstein Guest House. This assumption has been made on the basis that the pattern of the window grills in the photograph match with the window grills at the Bose-Einstein Guest House today (2022). It is likely that the distinguished guests were welcomed at the guest house as soon as they arrived on campus. The guest house was a new facility on campus which was completed in the…
This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. It appears that either lunch or refreshments have been served to the distinguished guests and administrators. It is very likely that this photograph was taken at the Machines Laboratory on the ground floor of the Electrical Science Block (ESB). This assumption has been made on the basis that the window grills in the Machines Laboratory today (2022) match the grills in the photograph. Mr. Walter Scheel was the first Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. Seen in the…
This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to IIT Madras. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany at the time. He visited various parts of the campus during his visit to the Institute. It is likely that Mr. Scheel and the other German visitors were welcomed at the Bose-Einstein Guest House before they visited the rest of the campus. Seen in the photograph, (in the last row, near the pillars) Prof. R. A. Kraus (former Adviser to the Government of India for IIT Madras, leftmost) and Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul General,…
The label reads “Visit of His Excellency / Mr. Walter Scheel / (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) / to / The Indian Institute of Technology / Madras / on / 4th December 1963”
Mr. Walter Scheel visited IIT Madras in December 1963. Mr. Walter Scheel was the first Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. Seen in the image are set-ups for deep drawing and rubber pad forming techniques of production. Rubber pad forming is a metal working process where sheet metal is pressed between a die and a rubber block made of polyurethane. Under pressure, the rubber and sheet metal are driven into the die and conform to its shape, forming the part. Circular, square and rectangular cups, flanges etc. can be produced with both ferrous and non-ferrous metals. Deep drawing is a sheet metal forming process in which a sheet metal blank is radially drawn into a forming die by the mechanical action of a punch.…
