Pritam Lal Kapur is known for having started the Film Club in 1961. He served as the Secretary of the club and has also written an article titled ‘Film Club’ describing the nature of the club. He writes, “1961 will remain a significant year in the History of our Institute, since it marks the birth of the Film Club.” The Film Club is still active (As of March 2020). The club has its office behind the large screen in the Open Air Theatre on the first floor. The first location of the club’s office is yet to be determined.

The Director’s Trophy was won by YMCA College of Physical Education, Chennai. This was the first Inter-Collegiate Sports Meet held by IIT Madras.  Seated from left, Mr. Lionel Paul (Sports Secretary), Mrs. Ann Lohmann Fischer, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras), Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul, Federal Republic of Germany) and Mr. Ananda Bhat (General Secretary).

The event has been described in the IIT Madras Annual Number of 1963-1964. Lionel Paul, the Sports Secretary states in his report that the event was held on 1 and 2 February, 1964. Paul notes that there were relatively few entries from the city colleges but the event was a success. He also writes the prizes were distributed by Mrs. Fischer, wife of chief guest Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul, Federal Republic of Germany).  It is not clear to us why the boy was receiving a prize. It is likely that the young boy (in shorts) is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Fischer.

In his report published in the Fifth Annual Number, Mr. Lionel Paul (Sports Secretary) notes that Mr. Fischer was a “champ athlete in his hey day.”

Gerhard Fischer was the Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany. He was the chief guest for the first Inter-Collegiate Sports Meet of IIT Madras. Mr. Fischer wrote a message in the Fifth Annual Number of IIT Madras, describing his role in Madras, “As the representative of the German Government in Madras I consider it to have been my privilege to have witnessed the gradual growth of this institution right from the blue-print stage some 4 years ago and to have played some part in this interesting and most useful development.”  In the photograph, Prof. D. This photograph was taken during the first Inter-Collegiate Sports Meet at the Institute. According to Lionel Paul’s (Sports Secretary) report in the IIT Madras Annual Number 1963-1964, the meet was followed by a sumptuous tea, after which the prize distribution was held.    Seated, from the left, Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (Director’s wife) and Mr. Gerhard Fischer (chief guest and Consul, Federal Republic of Germany). The gentleman to the right is yet to be identified.
