P. Ananda Bhat (Gymkhana General Secretary) was a student of Chemical Engineering who hailed from Karkala, Karnataka.  This photograph was possibly taken after the sports event took place at the stadium. We know from photographs that tea was served at the stadium after which a valedictory function was held at the venue.   This event has been described in the IIT Madras Annual Number of 1963-1964. This photograph was taken during the first Inter-Collegiate Sports Meet at the Institute. According to Lionel Paul’s (Sports Secretary) report in the IIT Madras Annual Number 1963-1964, the meet was followed by a sumptuous tea, after which the prize distribution was held.    In the photograph, facing camera, from the left, Mrs. Ann Lohmann Fisher, Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (Director’s wife) and Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul, Federal Republic of Germany). Prof. P. C. Varghese (Civil Engineering Department) is seen to the far right.

According to Lionel Paul’s (Sports Secretary) report in the IIT Madras Annual Number 1963-1964, the meet was followed by a sumptuous tea, after which the prize distribution was held.  Prof. B. Sengupto (Director, in black suit and sunglasses) and Prof. G. S. Laddha (Director of A. C. Tech., seated next to Prof. Sengupto, in a light suit and tie) are seen among others.

Lionel Paul (Sports Secretary) played tennis, hockey and table tennis. He also participated in track and field events. During his time at IIT Madras he evolved into an outstanding singles player and won the Stanley Cup, conducted by the Loyola College, for inter-collegiate Tennis a number of times. His tennis prowess even allowed him to tuck away a win against the Wimbledon semi-finalist Anand Amritraj one year. Lionel Paul served as General Secretary of the student body (Gymkhana) during the final year of his B. Tech.
