The Chief Guest, Dr. P. Subbarayan (Union Minister of Transport and Communication) distributed a number of prizes to students and faculty members at the Third Institute Day. The Institute Day of IIT Madras is a day marked to celebrate the hard work and success of certain people who have shown excellence in academics as well as extracurricular activities. The Third Institute Day took place at the Institute’s Building Sciences Block on the IITM campus. Prior to this the Institute Days took place in the hostels and this was the first time that event was being held in the academic zone of the Institution. The chief guest for the event was Dr. P. Subbarayan (Union Minister of Transport and Communications). The impressive number of people attending indicates the importance of the event.

The Third Institute Day took place at the Institute’s Building Sciences Block on the IITM campus. The Institute Day of IIT Madras is a day marked to celebrate and recognize the hard work and success of people who have shown excellence in academics as well as extracurricular activities. Mr. Simpson (student receiving the prize) was adjudged the fastest man in the meet when he ran the 100 metre sprint with a timing of 11.6 seconds. This has been recorded in B. S. Sudhir Chandra’s article ‘Third Inter-IIT Meet’ in Pradeep magazine (1965). IIT Kharagpur won the Inter IIT Sports Meet that year (in 1964), for the third time in a row. The current champion, as of December 2020, is IIT Kharagpur. As of December 2020, IIT Madras has the most wins in the tournament with 22 wins since 1961. Also seen in the photograph is Prof. B. Mansoor Ali Khan was the chief guest at the meet. He inaugurated the stadium and declared the meet open.  Nawab Mohammad Mansoor Ali Khan Siddiqui Pataudi captained the Indian cricket team from when he was 21 years of age. He was given the nickname ‘Tiger Pataudi’ owing to his exceptional fielding skills. He notes in his autobiography, "I had a tigerish propensity for crawling energetically about the floor on all fours." The Inter-IIT Sports Meet took place from 28 to 31 December. It was the first one to be held at IIT Madras. The cultural programme of the meet was most likely held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). Some of the programmes that were a part of the cultural event were plays in Tamil, Hindi and English, and music performances by groups from the different IITs.  The persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.   This photograph was published in the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1964-65.   An identical photograph can be found in the Central Photographic Section Collection in…

This photograph was taken on the occasion of the Third Inter-IIT Meet in 1964. The event was held in IIT Madras.  Seen in the photograph are Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar, third from left, standing) and Prof. P. C. Varghese (Gymkhana President, eighth from left, second row).

This was the first time that the Inter-IIT Sports Meet was held at IIT Madras. IIT Kharagpur had won the previous two meets which were held in Bombay (1961) and Kharagpur (1963). IIT Kharagpur managed to make it a hat trick of wins when they clinched the trophy once again at IIT Madras. It is not clear who the student in the photograph is. This photograph was also published in the Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1964-65. Mansoor Ali Khan, the Indian cricket captain is known for leading India to their first overseas win against New Zealand in 1967. Apart from cricket, Mansoor also played hockey and billiards for Oxford. He also played the midfield position in football.  Khan, chief guest at the event, inaugurated the stadium at IIT Madras and declared the meet open. Mr. B. S. Sudhir Chandra, in his article in the first issue of ‘Pradeep’ writes that Khan gave a short speech in which he stressed the role of games and physical activity in Universities.
