The events associated with music during Mardi Gras ‘83, similar to the other editions of the festival, included the Indian Classical Music, Indian Light Music, Western Solo and Western Group competitions. The Western Solo competition included both vocals and instrumental categories.  Western Music Group competition was preceded by auditions after which five groups were chosen to compete, that were held prior to the competition for Madras teams and during the competition for outstation teams. The events and competitions during Mardi Gras, similar to the other editions, took place at venues such as Open Air Theatre, Humanities and Sciences Block and Shanti Kunj.  In general, events such as professional performances and a few music competitions took place at the Open Air Theatre, in the IIT Madras campus. Other events such as Fine Arts Competition, and light music took place at Shanti Kunj. Several other events took place at the Humanities and Sciences Block or at locations in between these places.

In the photograph, Noshir Contractor (Electrical Engineering, Batch of 1983) is seen on the extreme left talking into the microphone and Debjani Mukherjee (Alumna, Chemical Engineering) is seen on the extreme right, possibly during the Just a Minute (JAM) event at the Central Lecture Theatre. The poster in the background indicates that the Adayar Gate Hotel sponsored the ‘JAM and Dramatics’ event. The Fine Arts events were one of the most elaborately organised events of the festival, and were traditionally held at Shanti Kunj along with sylvan surroundings. The art events included painting, sketching, collage, poster making, cartooning, clay modelling, pot painting and sculpture (wax modelling or soap carving). Usually two art events were conducted in a day, and the students could choose the events they wanted to participate in.

Mardi Gras was regarded as one of the largest cultural festivals in the country, with several colleges from all over the country participating each year. Mardi Gras, was one of the largest cultural festivals that took place over five days in 1983. From colleges across India, such as from Bangalore, Delhi, Jamshedpur and Bhubaneswar, students visited the IIT Madras campus to participate and attend the events during the festival. The cultural festival was characterised by a number of events and games that were organised, as well as professional shows that were performed.

In the photograph, Alagu Balaraman (Mechanical Engineering, batch of 1985) can be seen being strolled around in a wheelbarrow by Anand Kasturi (Civil Engineering, batch of 1984), holding a sign indicating that the ‘music quiz’ was taking place at the Central Lecture Theatre, and that the Prelims results were out during Mardi Gras ‘83. It was possibly used as an advertisement or an announcement regarding the event. Other students can be seen in the background near counters and stalls, possibly outside the Open Air Theatre.

In the photograph, students can be seen participating in an event, possibly the Western Music Group competition, during Mardi Gras (1983). Two participants are seen playing the guitar, while one of the participants is on the keyboard. The location is possibly the open air theatre. During the Western Solo event, participants were provided with an acoustic guitar, an electric guitar, an accordion, an electric organ and a drum set. For the western group event, participants were provided a ‘Tama’ drum set, Fender and Ibanez guitars and basses, keyboards and pedals for special effects.

The music competitions included the Indian Classical Music, Indian Light Music, Western Solo and Western Group competitions. The Western Solo competition included both vocals and instrumental categories. The Western Music Group competition was preceded by auditions after which five groups were chosen to compete, that were held prior to the competition for Madras teams and during the competition for outstation teams. In the Indian Light Music competition participants and teams were given fifteen minutes to perform with a maximum of eight participants on stage at a time.
