The events associated with music during Mardi Gras ‘83, similar to the other editions of the festival, included the Indian Classical Music, Indian Light Music, Western Solo and Western Group competitions. The events and competitions during Mardi Gras, similar to the other editions, took place at venues such as Open Air Theatre, Humanities and Sciences Block and Shanti Kunj. In general, events such as professional performances and a few music competitions took place at the Open Air Theatre, in the IIT Madras campus. Other events such as Fine Arts Competition, and light music took place at Shanti Kunj. Several other events took place at the Humanities and Sciences Block or at locations in between these places.

The Fine Arts events were one of the most elaborately organised events of the festival, and were traditionally held at Shanti Kunj along with sylvan surroundings. The art events included painting, sketching, collage, poster making, cartooning, clay modelling, pot painting and sculpture (wax modelling or soap carving). Usually two art events were conducted in a day, and the students could choose the events they wanted to participate in.

Mardi Gras, was one of the largest cultural festivals that took place over five days in 1983. From colleges across India, such as from Bangalore, Delhi, Jamshedpur and Bhubaneswar, students visited the IIT Madras campus to participate and attend the events during the festival. The cultural festival was characterised by a number of events and games that were organised, as well as professional shows that were performed.
In the photograph, Alagu Balaraman (Mechanical Engineering, batch of 1985) can be seen being strolled around in a wheelbarrow by Anand Kasturi (Civil Engineering, batch of 1984), holding a sign indicating that the ‘music quiz’ was taking place at the Central Lecture Theatre, and that the Prelims results were out during Mardi Gras ‘83.
