Taken at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT), this photograph shows some of the administrators and distinguished guests at IIT Madras. The event was held to officially hand over the West German gift to IIT Madras. This gift was the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras which arrived towards the end of 1987. The installation for the system started on 23 November 1987 and it was completed on 7 December 1987. In this photograph, the distinguished guests and visitors from Germany along with some of the IIT Madras administrators are seen at the new Computer Centre. The reason for the visit of the Germans was to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. It was done in a grand manner, with a function held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT). Mr. Hans Klein was the chief guest for the occasion. Mr. Klein was the Minister for Economic Co-operation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited IIT Madras in 1988 in order to officially hand the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras, as agreed upon in the Indo-German Agreement. Although the event took place in 1988, the system had been installed at the Institute towards the end of 1987. Mr. Klein served as Minister for Special Affairs from 1989-1990. He also interacted with some of the people at the Centre. In this photograph, Mr. P. Seshasayi (Manager, Computer Centre) points out something to the chief guest Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany) at the Computer Centre. It is likely that the terminal is the VT-100 model. Mr. P. Seshasayi mentions in a Campastimes interview from February 1988 that apart from the 80 terminals, another 70 VT-100 terminals could be connected to the system. Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras along with Mr. Hans Klein and other German visitors in order to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. The computer was gifted to IIT Madras by the West German Government as part of the Indo-German Agreement. The sapling was planted possibly to commemorate the opening of the Computer Sciences Block and to symbolize the Indo-German bond. In 1988, several German political figures and diplomats visited IIT Madras. The reason for this visit was to officially hand over the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras. Although the system arrived with 80 terminals in 1987, the official ceremony was held only in March 1988. Some of the guests included Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany, right) and Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany, second from right). Prof. L. S. Srinath (DIrector of IIT Madras) is seen at the extreme left in the photograph.…
