This photograph was taken during the fusion show held during the second night of Saarang. According to a report in The Hindu, “Saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath and Moksha, the rock band, performed a fusion show on the second night.”  Kadri Gopalnath was born in 1950 in Karnataka. He was introduced to music by his father Thaniappan, a Nadaswaram vidwan. Gopalnath’s interest gravitated towards the saxophone over the years. Kadri Gopalnath received the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in the early 2000s and the Padma Shri in 2004.

This photograph was taken during IIT Madras’ annual cultural and social fest Saarang. The event was held from 22 to 26 January. This photograph was taken on the second night of Saarang, during the fusion concert. The concert featured the saxophonist Kadri Gopalnath, who played alongside Moksha, a rock band. The event took place in a packed Open Air Theatre. We are not sure who the guitarist in the photograph is. If you have any information about the person, please reach out to us.

This photograph was taken during Saarang’s fusion night, which took place on the second night of the mega event. Fusion night featured the rock band Moksha and Kadri Gopalnath, the legendary saxophonist from India. We are not sure who the person in the photograph is, but it is likely that he was a part of the band. If you have any information about the person, please reach out to us.

Also seen on stage are, Mrs. Shanthi Sengupto (wife of Prof. B. Sengupto), Mr. Venkataraman (Minister of Industries, Madras Government) and a person yet to be identified. The Staff Club included facilities such as a reading room, and indoor and outdoor games. For the entertainment and benefit of the members and their families dance, drama, music performances and films were showcased frequently and during regular intervals. The Staff Club also conducted events such as Annual Day and Annual Tournament in which several members took part.

The Staff Club was inaugurated by the Minister of Industries of the Madras State, Sri. R. Venkataraman, in 1965. The club had approximately 240 members during the year 1965. The office bearers were Prof. B. Sengupto (First Director of the Institute and Patron of the Staff Club), R. G. Narayanamurthy (Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and President of the Staff Club), Prof. S. Sampath (Professor of Electrical Engineering Department and Vice-President of Staff Club), Sri P.S. Srinivasan (Treasurer of the Club) and several others. One of the performances during the inauguration function is captured through this photograph. In the Staff club, films were showcased at regular intervals, twice a month. Several classical dance performances as well as full-length dramas were also arranged. These were regularly arranged for the benefit of the Staff Club members and their families. This photograph of the dance performance by children indicates how the families of the members and their children also actively participated in the programmes and events. Prof. B. Sengupto who can also be seen in the photograph, was the first Director of IIT Madras. As Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthi (President of the Staff Club) and Mr. Venkataraman can be seen seated on the premises of the Staff Club, the raised platform behind them can still be located there today. Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthy was the Head of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the President of the Staff Club during the academic year (1965). Also seen on stage are Mrs. Shanthi Sengupto (wife of Prof. B Sengupto), Mr. Venkatraman (Minister of Industries, Madras Government), and Prof. B. Sengupto (first Director of the Institute). Dance performances, music performances, films and dramas were regularly showcased at the staff club for its members. The following year (1966), the club became a member of the South India Bridge Association (According to the Annual Report of 1966-67). By 1967, twenty-five films in different languages were screened and two plays were enacted by members of the club. A magic show and a mono-acting performance was also arranged during the same year (1966-67). Today the club also includes facilities such as a library and indoor recreation (Such as Carrom and Billiards).
