Bhaktavatsalam (Chief Minister of Madras State) distributed prizes to the students for academic distinction (1963-1964) as well as for various competitions organised by the Institute Gymkhana in the fields of sports, literary and other extra-curricular activities. Prem Watsa (Sports Secretary) completed his B. Tech. in Chemical Engineering in 1971. He completed his MBA from the University of Western Ontario and went on to pursue a successful career in business. He was awarded the Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian award of India, in 2020. Watsa was a member of the IIT Madras hockey team which won the trophy that year. He played the forward position. Also seen in the photograph are, in the first row, extreme left Mr. H. V. R. IIT Madras was unable to clinch a championship at the Inter-IIT Sports Meets for almost a decade. It was during the Eighth Inter-IIT Sports Meet in 1970 that IIT Madras won its first championship.
