This photograph was taken possibly after the event took place. We know from photographs and an Annual Number report that the meet was followed by “a sumptuous tea, after which the prize distribution was held.” It is likely that this photograph was taken around the time of the prize distribution event. The event has been described in the IIT Madras Annual Number of 1963-1964. Lionel Paul, the Sports Secretary states in his report that the event was held on 1 and 2 February, 1964. Paul notes that there were relatively few entries from the city colleges but the event was a success. …

Paul notes that there were relatively few entries from the city colleges but the event was a success. He also writes the prizes were distributed by Mrs. Fischer, wife of chief guest Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul, Federal Republic of Germany). We know from an Annual Number report that Mrs. Fischer distributed prizes after the meet, although we are not sure what prize is being given to Prof. Sampath in this photograph. The event has been described in the IIT Madras Annual Number of 1963-1964. Lionel Paul, the Sports Secretary states in his report that the event was held on 1 and 2 February, 1964. Lionel Paul (Sports Secretary) played tennis, hockey and table tennis. He also participated in track and field events. During his time at IIT Madras he evolved into an outstanding singles player and won the Stanley Cup, conducted by the Loyola College, for inter-collegiate Tennis a number of times. His tennis prowess even allowed him to tuck away a win against the Wimbledon semi-finalist Anand Amritraj one year. Lionel Paul served as General Secretary of the student body (Gymkhana) during the final year of his B. Tech.

The event has been described in the IIT Madras Annual Number of 1963-1964. Lionel Paul, the Sports Secretary states in his report that the event was held on 1 and 2 February, 1964. Paul notes that there were relatively few entries from the city colleges but the event was a success. He also writes the prizes were distributed by Mrs. Fischer, wife of chief guest Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul, Federal Republic of Germany). The overall winner of the event was the YMCA College of Physical Education according to Paul’s report.   The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.

Mr. Hans Lenz (Minister for Scientific Research, Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn) visited IIT Madras on 30th January, 1964. A high tea ceremony was thrown in honour of his visit to the campus. During the ceremony, Mr. Hans Lenz interacted with the dignitaries, administrative staff and faculty members present.  In the image, Mr. Hans Lenz converses with the dignitaries over refreshments. Seen standing in the image is Mrs. Shanthi Sengupto (wife of the Director, Prof. B. Sengupto).

On 30th January, 1964 Mr. Hans Lenz (Minister for Scientific Research, Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn) visited IIT Madras. A high tea ceremony was thrown in honour of his visit to the campus. Mr. Hans Lenz was received in front of the Building Sciences Block by Prof. Sengupto (Director) and other administration officials of the Institution. In the image, Mr. Hans Lenz (seated in the front of the car) arrives at the IIT Madras campus. In a Campastimes report from February 1971, it is mentioned that Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the closing ceremony while Mrs. Iengar gave away the prizes. It is not clear which event the prize was being given for, but judging by the figure on the trophy, it appears to be for a throwing event. The lady in the saree is Mrs. Iengar and to her right hand side is Mr. Navzer Mehta (General Secretary). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.

Food stalls can be seen behind the speaker, including a Maggi “2 minutes” food stall. Though the photograph is focused on the speaker, there are other subjects in this image such as a Saarang volunteer possibly on a mobile phone, a Maggi food stall, other food stalls, a motorbike, several participants, and a bicycle. This photograph was taken outdoors, within one of the venues on the IIT Madras campus, where the Saarang food stalls were assembled. Behind the participant, the name of the cultural festival is written in chalk on a blackboard: “Saarang - 2005.” It is not known whether this photograph is of a Singing or Speaking event as there were numerous kinds of events held during Saarang. Some of these events were: Quiz, Potpourri, Extempore, Informals, Creative Writing, Debate, Fine Arts, Semi Classical Vocals, Radio Play and Crossie, Light Music, Western Music, Elocution, live professional music shows and workshops.
