Dr. A. L. Mudaliar assumed office as the first Chairman of the Board of Governors at IIT Madras on 1 January 1959. He served as Chairman from 1959 to 1969 for a period of 10 years and made significant contributions to the Institute during his term. Mr. C. Subramaniam (Minister of Education for Madras State and chief guest) can be seen (extreme left). He was Minister for Education, Law and Finance for Madras State from 1952 to 1962. Institute Days were held towards the end of the academic year and consisted of cultural programmes, speeches and a prize distribution ceremony. Students, staff and faculty who contributed to the Institute in various ways were given prizes for their work. Institute Days in the 1960s were mostly held at the Open Air Theatre (OAT).
