On 30th January, 1964 Mr. Hans Lenz (Minister for Scientific Research, Federal Republic of Germany, Bonn) visited IIT Madras. A high tea ceremony was thrown in honour of his visit to the campus. During the ceremony, Mr. Hans Lenz interacted with the dignitaries, administrative staff and faculty members present.  In the image, Mr. Hans Lenz converses with the dignitaries over refreshments. Delivering the chief guest’s address, Mr. M. C. Chagla called the convocation “one of the most imposing convocations I have ever addressed.” Seated in the first row (L to R), Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar-to-be) and Mr. Rajagopalan (Deputy Registrar). Sethunathan would take over the post of Registrar 3 days after the convocation. The officer (sixth from right in first row) has been identified as Commodore Jimmy D. Modi (Director, Directorate of NCC Tamil Nadu, identified by Cmdr. M. D. Menon). Seen in the image is a cream coloured leaflet made of firm cartridge paper and measuring 6.02*4.21 inches was used to make a formal announcement of the Minister’s visit. The details printed on the leaflet were printed using simple fonts and black ink. Furthermore, the margins of the leaflet were serrated. On 30th January, 1964 Mr. Hans Lenz (Minister for Science and Research, Federal Republic of Germany) visited IIT Madras.
