The photograph shows an autograph by cartoonist R. K. Laxman on the day when he was the speaker for an extramural lecture titled ""Caricature and Reality: A Cartoonist's View Point". It was held at the Central Lecture Theatre (CLT) at IIT Madras on 30 September 1981, 3:00 PM. This material was contributed by Mr. Chaithanya Prasad Jayaraman of the Mechanical Engineering Department (1985 batch).

This photograph was taken during Mardi Gras in 1995. That was the last year in which the IIT Madras Cultural Festival was called so. It is now known as Saarang. This edition of Mardi Gras was held from January 24-29 1995. The brochure for that year names the theme of Mardi Gras as "Back with a bang!" with programmes across the categories of literary, debating, arts, musical and informal events. This photograph was taken when the B.Tech. Aerospace Engineering batch of 1995 went to IIT Kanpur for a “lab tests during flights” course in the winter of 1994. This photograph shows the inter-IIT and inter-collegiate relationships that were prevalent even during that time. Mr. Gladston Arulanandam (Department of Electrical Engineering) is an alumnus of IIT Madras, having graduated in 1985. The Heritage Centre is grateful to Mr. Arulanandam for providing photographs from his days as a student, which have chronicled life at IIT Madras during the early to mid-1980s. The following photographs are part of the collection provided to us by Mr. Arulanandam.

Prof. Brian P. Schmidt was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2011 for his work in furthering research on dark energy and for proving that the expansion of the universe is accelerating. Prof. Schmidt is currently the Vice-Chancellor of the Australian National University (ANU).
