A live performance at Mardi Gras, 1986

This photograph was taken during the Mardi Gras cultural festival of IIT Madras in 1986. It shows several Indian classical musicians at Mardi Gras ‘86. The musicians are seated on a raised platform. The musicians have been identified as Umayalpuram K. Sivaraman (on the Mridangam, second from left), Prof. T. T. Narendran (on the Veena, third from left), G. Hari Shankar (on the Kanjira, second from right) and Zakir Hussain (on the Tabla, extreme right). 

According to the 1986 Mardi Gras invitation card, Mardi Gras ‘86 took place from 22-26 January. 

Mardi Gras was the cultural festival of IIT Madras which still lives on through the name of Saarang. Mardi Gras took place annually in the IIT Madras campus for a period of 5 days comprising events and competitions such as dance, music, quiz, debate, drama, fine arts, photography.

Professional performances also took place during Mardi Gras and they were greatly awaited. According to the Mardi Gras invitation card, some of these performances included ‘Talavadya,’ ‘Jugalbandi,’ and dance and Carnatic performances. In the photograph, the words Talavadya and Jugalbandi are seen decorated on the curtains behind the musicians.
