The chief guest for the seventh convocation, Dr. V. V. Giri, inspects the guard of honour

In the image the chief guest Dr. V. V. Giri (President of India) is escorted by two NCC cadets and an NCC Officer as he inspects the guard of honour that was presented to him before the convocation ceremony. Also seen behind the chief guest is a person who appears to be his bodyguard.


The seventh convocation of IITM was held on a Saturday evening at 5:00 pm, the 29th of August, 1970. Dr. Y. Nayudamma, representing the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Institute (Mr. H. V. R. Iengar), presided over the ceremony. The chief guest for the event was Dr. V. V. Giri. A German delegate, Mr. Gunter Diehl, also attended the event.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
