This photograph was taken in January 1968, when the German Academic Exchange Service (D. A. A. D.) organized a seminar at IIT Madras. Dr. Emil Lehnartz (President of the D. A. A. D.) attended the event along with several other Germans from the D. A. A. D. organization. The seminar was conducted to bring together the former scholarship holders from the German exchange and discuss future plans for the exchange service and the ways in which it could be improved. 

Seen in the image, seated, Prof. B. Sengupto (Former Director of IIT Madras, second from left), Dr. Karl Pfauter (Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany, fourth from left) and Dr. Emil Lehnartz (President of the D. A. A. D., extreme right). Prof. Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras. He stepped down as Director in December 1967, handing over the reins to Prof. A. Ramachandran. However, he stayed back at the Institute until 21 January 1968 before leaving.
