This photograph was taken during the visit of Mr. Walter Scheel to the Institute. Mr. Scheel was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. He visited the various facilities in IIT Madras, including the Central Workshops, laboratories and the academic buildings. This photograph was probably taken at the Machines Laboratory on the ground floor of the Electrical Science Block (ESB). The windows of this building match with that of the Machines Laboratory today (2022). 

Seen in the photograph, Prof. Krishnamurthi (Head of Humanities Department, closest to the camera), Prof. W. Koch (Department of Physics, to Prof. Krishnamurthi’s left hand side), Prof. R. A. Kraus (former Adviser to the Government of India for IIT Madras, second from right on the table near windows), Dr. G. A. Sonnenhol (Ministerialdirektor, Federal Republic of Germany, third from right), Dr. A. L. Mudaliar (Chairman, Board of Governors, fourth from right on Prof. Kraus’ table), Mr. Walter Scheel (Minister of Economic Cooperation, Federal Republic of Germany, to Dr. Mudaliar’s right hand side), Prof. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, to Mr. Scheel’s right hand side) and Dr. Y. Nayudamma (Director, CLRI, fourth from left on Prof. Kraus’ table). Mr. R. Natarajan (Registrar) can be seen seated next to the lady on the table behind Prof. R. Krishnamurthi.

Photographer:
C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
