Dr. M. S. Swaminathan (chief guest) can be seen giving away a prize to a student in the photograph and the audience is seen in the background, at the Open Air Theatre (OAT). There is also an individual with a camera who can be seen capturing a photograph.

In 1976, during the 13th convocation, the President’s Prize was awarded to V. Srinivasan (B. Tech, Department of Mechanical Engineering) and the Governor’s Prize was awarded to Gadgil Surendra Janardan (B.Tech, Department of Mechanical Engineering). The Siemen’s Prizes were won by L. K. Prakash Narayan (Department of Electrical Engineering) and A. Subash Chandran (Department of Electrical Engineering). The Philips India Prize was won by Vikram Vishwas Karmarkar (Department of Electrical Engineering) and the Banco Foundation Prize was awarded to V. Srinivasan (Department of Mechanical Engineering). Finally, the Prof. B. Sengupto Prize was awarded to N. Madhusudhanan (M. Tech, Chemical Engineering).

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
