A group of students lead the invocation at the eighth convocation

The student leading the invocation is Ms. Shobha Sharma who was a Ph.D. scholar at the time. The administrators, faculty and dignitaries seen standing in the image from the right are: Mr. C. V. Sethunathan (Registrar), Prof. B. S. Murthy(Mechanical Engineering department), three individuals who are yet to be identified, Prof. C. Rama Sastry(Physics department), Prof. D. V. Reddy (Applied Mechanics department), Prof. Nigam (Mathematics department), Prof. R. K. Gupta(Humanities and Social Sciences), Prof. P. C. Varghese (Mechanical Engineering department), Prof. M. V. C. Sastry(Chemistry department), Prof. E. G. Ramachandran(Metallurgical Engineering department), Prof. R. G. Narayanamurthy(Mechanical Engineering department), an individual who is yet to be identified, Prof. M. G. K. Menon (Director, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Bombay and Chairman, Electronics Commission, Govt. of India), Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors), Prof. A. Ramachandran (Director, IITM) and Prof. S. Sampath (Deputy Director).


The eighth convocation of IITM took place on July 31, 1971. The event began at 05:00 pm that Saturday and the chief guest and speaker for the event was Prof. M. G. K. Menon. Mr. H. V. R. Iengar (Chairman, Board of Governors) presided over the event. The majority of the event consisted of the conferment of degrees and awards which was followed by the chief guest’s convocation address.

C. Gourishankar (1926-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
