Major General Virendra Singh inspects a guard of honour, 1965

Campus Buildings , Inaugurations , Institute Events

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of the NCC building on 14 December 1965. Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General of NCC) was the chief guest for the occasion.

The NCC building was completed at a cost of 5.8 lakhs (according to the Seventh Annual Number of IIT Madras, 1965-66). It was constructed to house the different units of the NCC in IIT Madras. During the time, IIT Madras had four technical NCC units which had replaced the NCC Rifles in 1964. The units were 6 Madras Engineer Coy., 3 Madras Signal Coy., 6 Madras (Electrical and Mechanical Engineering Unit (2 Coy.) and 4 Madras Technical Air Squadron. The NCC unit in IIT Madras currently has one unit, 4 (TN) Air Sqn. Tech. NCC.

The NCC building is located roughly opposite the Ocean Engineering Department. It currently houses the JEE/GATE office (as of September 2021).
