Mr. Klein was at IIT Madras in order to hand the Siemens 7580-E computer system to IIT Madras. The Indo-German agreement had made a provision for a computer to be given to IIT Madras. The computer was chosen by the Federal Republic of Germany.

Seen in the photograph are Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany, left) and Prof. H. N. Mahabala. Prof. Mahabala was a Professor in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras from 1972 to 1995. He mentored many students during the course of his career.
