Mr. Hans Klein operating a terminal, 1988

Academic Facilities , Campus Facilities , Faculty

This photograph was taken at the new Computer Centre at IIT Madras. It shows Mr. Hans Klein operating the Siemens system. According to the Annual Report of IIT Madras, 1987, 80 terminals were sent from Germany to India in the academic year. They were placed at the Computer Centre. The plan was to distribute the terminals across the campus once they were ready.

The Federal Republic of Germany gifted the Siemens 7580-E Computer System to IIT Madras as agreed in an Indo-German Agreement. The system arrived in 1987 and was installed by the end of the year. However, the official function to hand over the system was held only in March 1988 in the presence of German politicians and diplomats. The function was held at the Central Lecture Theatre, after which the distinguished German guests and visitors were taken to the new Computer Sciences Block.

Seen in the image, Mr. Hans Klein (Minister for Economic Co-operation, Federal Republic of Germany, seated), Dr. Konrad Seitz (Ambassador, Federal Republic of Germany, behind Mr. Klein) and Prof. H. N. Mahabala (Department of Computer Science and Engineering, second from left).
