Mr. Walter Scheel at IIT Madras, 1963

Visiting VIPs , Administrators

Mr. Scheel visited IIT Madras in December 1963. He was the Minister of Economic Cooperation for the Federal Republic of Germany. During his visit to the Institute, he visited several facilities on campus such as the Central Workshops, some of the laboratories and also the Bose-Einstein Guest House. This photograph appears to have been taken at either the Building Science Block (BSB) where the administrative offices were located, or at the Electrical Science Block (ESB), where refreshments and food was most likely served. This cannot be the Bose-Einstein Guest House because the pillars of the guest house were circular and of a darker colour.

Seen in the photograph, from left, Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, extreme left, partially visible), Mr. T. N. Venkataraman (Chief Security Officer, second from left, in white uniform), Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, third from left), Prof. R. A. Kraus (former Adviser to the Government of India for IIT Madras, fourth from left), Mr. Walter Scheel (Minister of Economic Cooperation, Federal Republic of Germany, sixth from left) and Mr. Gerhard Fischer (Consul General, Federal Republic of Germany, extreme right).
