NCC Building in the IIT Madras campus

Campus Facilities , Campus Buildings

According to the 1967 Convocation Brochure of IIT Madras, “The N.C.C. Building on the Institute Campus was declared open in December 1965 by Major General Virendra Singh.” Major General Virendra Singh was the Director-General of NCC who visited IIT Madras on 14 December 1965 to inaugurate the NCC building and also take part in the NCC Day celebrations which was on the same day.

This building currently (as of September 2022) serves as the JEE/GATE office. It is located adjacent to the Department of Engineering Design and opposite to the Department of Ocean Engineering.

The 15 February 1966 edition of Campastimes has published two photographs taken during the opening of the NCC Building in 1965. There is a photograph of Major General Virendra Singh inspecting the parade and the demonstration of a tank attack during air support. The Heritage Centre has preserved images from the events in Albums 0231 (Gourishankar Collection) and 0004 (Central Photographic Section Collection).
