One of the meetings during the visit of Prof. Hilbig and Mr. Westphal, 1965

Administrators , Faculty , Institute Events

This photograph was taken during the visit of Prof. Hilbig and Mr. Westphal from the Technical University of Berlin. There were a series of meetings spread over a few days in which the two gentlemen met with the administrators and faculty of IIT Madras.

According to the article ‘Tu Berlin And IIT’ by DJN published in Campastimes, Prof. Dr. P. Hilbig (Vice-Rector, Technical University, Berlin) and Mr. H. Westphal (Director, Academic Foreign Relations Office, Technical University, Berlin) visited all the departments and met with the Director in order to get an idea about the Institute and the ways in which Technical University, Berlin could help IIT Madras under the Second Indo-German Agreement. DJN notes in ‘Tu Berlin And IIT’ that Prof. Hilbig had said “Knowing the availabilities there and the needs here, we now know what can be done”. They had decided that it would not be possible to send senior German faculty for long periods of time to IIT Madras, but only on a short term basis for two or three months to deliver lectures and conduct seminars and group discussions.

Sitting, from left, Prof. Dr. P. Hilbig (Vice-Rector, Technical University, Berlin, second from left), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, third from left) and Prof. W. Koch (Physics Department). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
