The inauguration of the NCC building took place on 14 December 1965, which was also NCC Day. Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General, NCC), was associated with IIT Madras even prior to 1965. He was the chief guest on the Institute NCC Day on 4 December 1963. It is likely that the Director-General was inaugurating the building in this photograph, owing to the fact that it appears as though he is pressing a switch or button which may have been placed on the table.
The NCC Office is currently located in one of the ‘Warden’s Quarters’ behind Himalaya Canteen (As of October 2021). The old NCC building, which was inaugurated in 1965 by Director-General of the NCC, Major General Virendra Singh, is now the JEE/GATE Office. It is located adjacent to the Department of Engineering Design and opposite to the Department of Ocean Engineering.
Seen in the photograph are Commodore Jimmy D. Modi (Director of NCC, Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry, second from left), Major General Virendra Singh (Director-General, NCC, standing third from left) and Prof. B. Sengupto (Director of IIT Madras, fourth from left). The other persons in the photograph are yet to be identified.
