Prof. B. Sengupto addresses the audience during the Fourth Institute Day, 1963

Prof. Bibhutibhushan Sengupto was the first Director of IIT Madras. He played a pivotal role in the rapid growth that took place during the initial years of the Institute. Most of his earlier education took place in East Bengal and Calcutta. He studied at the Benaras Hindu University which was one of the leading universities at that time, known for its engineering education. He then went to Manchester, England for further education. Prof. B. Sengupto was selected to be founder Director of IIT Madras in 1958, and he joined IIT Madras in 1959. Prior to joining IIT Madras, Prof. Sengupto was the first Principal of Victoria Jubilee Technical Institute (VJTI) in Bombay.

C. Gourishankar (1936-2002). A geologist by qualification, Gourishankar started his career as a photographer after working for many years with the Geological Survey of India. In everything that he did, Gourishankar strove to achieve flawlessness and impeccable quality. Thus his photography too was characterised by this drive for perfection. Every photograph that Gourishankar took was meticulously planned and shot and printed with diligence and patience. Gourishankar carried out most of the official photography at IIT Madras in the 1960s.
