Sadarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh plants a tree, 1966

Campus Buildings , Inaugurations , Institute Events

This photograph was taken during the inauguration of Alakananda Hostel in 1966. According to the April 1966 edition of Campastimes, the programme started with the cutting of the ribbon by Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh, wife of chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh. Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh planted a tree at the hostel after declaring it open. From the photographs available, we can guess that at least four trees were planted in the hostel by the chief guest Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras), Prof. B. Sengupto (Director), Mrs. Shanti Sengupto (the Director’s wife) and Sardarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh. Tree planting was followed by the Director’s speech. The programme also included tea, Governor’s speech, introduction of students to the Governor, and a speech by the Warden. The events have been recorded in Campastimes.

Seen in the image, Sardar Ujjal Singh (Governor of Madras and chief guest, wearing white turban), Sadarni Sant Sev Ujjal Singh (planting a tree), Mr. Y. S. Ramaswamy (Superintending Engineer, standing fourth from left), and Mr. S. S. Mani (Alakananda Warden and Workshop Superintendent, standing fifth from left).
